Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
