Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
