Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
