The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.
Swift Approval in Both Chambers
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.
Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the Senate Democratic leader stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Future Action
The bill next will be sent to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.
Though the president has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it comes to him.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their representatives who were present in a public section, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose specific data of people, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
